How to Winterize Your Lawn Mower in 5 Easy Steps

5 steps to winterize your lawn mower

Prior to you put power tools away for the winter, make sure that they’re all set to be saved. All it takes is a few simple actions to make sure that your mower will start up easily in the spring.

1– Empty the Gas Tank
If your lawn mower runs on gas, you’ll need to empty it. Search in the owner’s manual for directions on how to do this and make sure to dispose of the gas safely. Or, even better, run the mower till it runs out of gas. If you leave gas in the tank over the winter season, it can oxidize, trigger rust, or congeal into a jelly-like substance, all of which will harm your engine when you begin it in the spring. If for some reason you can’t empty the tank, attempt including a fuel stabilizer to the remaining gas (but keep in mind that stabilizers work best on fresh fuel, not gas that’s been in the tank for a while). Fuel stabilizers are safe for many 2- and 4-cycle engines but examine your owner’s handbook initially; some brand names particularly mention not to add stabilizer and doing so can void the service warranty.

2– Change the Oil
Follow the guidelines in your owner’s manual on this one.

3– Check and/or Change the Spark Plug
Remove the trigger plug and examine it for damage, corrosion, and/or dirt. If it’s not looking excellent then get a brand-new one. Include a small amount of oil to the crankcase and after that reinstall the trigger plug, however don’t connect the ignition cable (you’ll do that in the spring).

4– Clean the Entire Lawn Mower
Idea the lawn mower on edge to clean up the underside; do not turn it upside-down! Once you’ve wiped and scraped off all particles, rinse the lawn mower totally with a tube, being cautious not to get water into the engine compartment.

5– Check and/or Sharpen the Mower Blade
Take a close take a look at the blade for wear and tear. Many blades are pretty dented up at the end of the season (if you’re like me, you’ve probably run over plenty of sticks and stones). If the blade is nicked or dull, utilize a durable file or a grinder to submit down and hone the edges. If the lawn mower blade looks like it’s harmed, it’s much better to merely replace it with a brand-new one.
